This is the article discussed in this episode: “Why you?”
In episode 8 of The Parenting Paradox, StoicMom and Regina tackle the question of why we are so scared of our own inner light. When we can embrace that light and do the inner work on ourselves, we no longer project our pain and hurt on the world around us.
StoicMom describes how challenging it is to paint this picture of reorienting to life in a spiritual way. It is an immensely freeing experience, and incredibly difficult to grasp until you begin to get glimpses of how much better it feels. Even still, we’ll resist this path that feels so foreign and to which so few around us can relate. We’ll question ourselves and the validity of this new way, until we recognize we’re on our own hero’s journey—to free ourselves of the agony that will continue to push us in this direction.
They explain the embodiment aspect of this work, and how we literally change our physiology through changing our questions and reorienting to a different way of experiencing our circumstances. By consciously choosing more empowering questions, we can play a different game and embrace “the curriculum of the soul.” This process leads to us being able to live from a more peaceful place. And living from a more embodied, peaceful place opens us up to more resourcefulness and possibility.
This is where the hero's journey comes from. That is an archetypal experience that every human will be invited into. Yet not all of us will heed the call. And if we don't heed the call, I believe we stay in agony.
StoicMom
StoicMom and Regina touch on how to reorient to life in a more playful way. It doesn’t make the work easier but it does make it more fun. And humans learn through play.
They note that living a purposeful life can feel lonely and intimidating. Finding a community or a coach who understands and knows how to support your unfolding can help you to make sense of the agony that brought you to this point, and keep you committed to your growth and becoming.
We can’t all do great things. But we can all do small things with great love.
